Ever since I signed up for the incredibly awesome Marvel Unlimited service (you get access to nearly all of Marvel’s library, with a six-month delay on new issues), New Comic Day coincides with Marvel’s Monday refresh of the app.
This morning I was thrilled to see I’m finally getting the first issue of last year’s insane “morality switch” event, Axis.
How insane is it? Well, besides it leading up to a big “heroes are villainous and villains are heroic” flip-flop, this is on the very first page.
That’s right, the supervillain, Red Skull, stole the brain of X-Men mentor Charles Xavier, and is using it to give himself psychic powers. And that’s just on the “Previously…” page! I haven’t seen the first real panel yet!
If you’ve ever wondered why I like comics or why I write superhero fiction, there’s your reason right there. Comics, for all their baggage, are a place where you can, and are expected to, do anything. Honestly, I see a panel like that, and I look at The League Cycle universe, and all I can think is that I need to up my game! The heroes of Book 2 aren’t going to know what hit ’em.
